Mullican Flooring is the exclusive flooring sponsor of HGTV’s Urban Oasis Giveaway, located at the Residences at W New York-Downtown luxury high-rise apartments in Lower Manhattan. The giveaway, running now through Oct. 20, includes a fully furnished 900 sq. ft. apartment and an Acura ZDX – a package valued at $1.5 million.

HGTV designer Vern Yip and HGTV house planner Jack Thomasson were both involved with the project. “I’m in love with New York City and I wanted this space to be a love letter to the city,” Yip explained. “This was an opportunity to capture the spirit of the city – the mix of contemporary and antiques, and the mix of cultures.”

The living room of the HGTV Urban Oasis features Mullican wire-brushed walnut flooring and soaring views of New York City.

For flooring Yip chose Mullican’s wire-brushed walnut in ebony brown from the company’s 3/4” thick Frontier collection of solid hardwood flooring. “The flooring may not seem like an obvious choice for New York City, but I wanted people to feel that this space is warm and inviting. New York isn’t just about being fast-paced; there is also a side that is about cherishing the past.”

Mullican’s Frontier collection, which was launched last year, “offers flooring with character. Consumers have been wanting different treatments, whether hand-sculpted, wire-brushed or distressed,” said Brian Greenwell, Mullican’s vp sales and marketing.

Eight hundred sq. ft. of Mullican’s solid walnut hardwood flooring is featured in the kitchen, bedroom, front entry/hallway and living room. Yip also used antique Peruvian rugs and runners in the living room and kitchen, a wool rug in the bedroom, and marble tile in a herringbone pattern in the bathroom.

Greenwell said that Mullican’s involvement in the HGTV Urban Oasis Giveaway is “a great opportunity to build our brand in this sluggish economy.”

“HGTV has a huge audience, and their websites are in the top 20 in the world as far as hits are concerned,” he said. Greenwell added that being involved in such a prestigious project gives the company a sense of pride. “The apartment is beautiful. It’s got a great view of the Statue of Liberty.”

One of Yip’s favorite areas in the apartment is the front entry. The Mullican hardwood flooring there has been installed lengthwise to lead the eye to the kitchen and adjoining living room, and to offer a dramatic sense of the space, Yip said. The hallway features a New York City Public Library theme, complete with reclaimed solid marble lions that evoke the famous statues that sit at the front steps of the library, and a large framed photograph of people studying in the library.

“Throughout the apartment, I wanted to capture both the old and the new,” Yip noted. “That is New York City to me.”
