Sandoval was a native of Honduras who had lived in the United States for most of her life. She had recently retired and moved to Copan, Honduras, on the border with Guatemala. In retirement, she was active helping poor children, and guiding researchers and visitors who arrive in Copan to tour the region's ancient Mayan ruins.
