The Tandus Flooring Environmental Center in Dalton, Ga., is now certified through Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). Certification of the reclamation center means it is guaranteed to conform with Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Guides for the Use of Environmental Claims, according to Tandus.

"Because of the enormous amount of confusion in our industry regarding environmental claims, we will continue to invest the necessary time and resources to provide customers with third party certification regarding the environmental aspects of our processes and products," said Glen Hussmann, president and ceo, Tandus Flooring.

More than 200 employee hours have been dedicated to data collection, meetings with SCS auditors and submission of detailed information for the rigorous requirements for the SCS certification. To maintain the certification, Tandus Flooring must demonstrate continued conformance with the standard set by SCS, and will be audited on an annual basis both internally and externally.

"We have a rich heritage of innovation with many ‘firsts’ to our credit," added Hussmann.  "We're proud to be the first in our industry to have our recycling facilities SCS certified."

Tandus said it has reclaimed and recycled more than 170 million pounds of flooring and manufacturing waste back into flooring since 1994. Floor products produced through reclamation are identified as ER3 products, and Tandus produces more than 8 million sq. ft. of ER3 products annually.
