Shaw Contract introduced Desert Lights, a new carpet and rug collection that draws inspiration from the plants, animals, and geography of the American Southwest, as well as the brilliant hues and subtleties of desert light as it transitions from dawn to dusk. Always underfoot, the collection emulates the sun’s warmth on millions of years of compact Earth, soothing those who move through hospitality spaces.

Desert Lights is Rockwell Group’s sixth collection in collaboration with Shaw Contract and features two different construction methods. The first is broadloom carpet utilizing Tailor Tuft, a custom tufting broadloom machine and proprietary technology that produces cut-and-loop construction that allows for pile height customization, resulting in plush, detailed, and sculpted surfaces. The second is broadloom carpet utilizing Canvas, a high-speed printed production in 76 dpi high-definition. This dye injection technology delivers five times the clarity of existing carpet color processing machines. Two of the custom patterns in the rug offering are available as running line rugs or broadloom. These rugs are finished with serged edges for a more high-end residential aesthetic.

“We wanted to imbue Desert Lights with a sense of wellness associated with time spent in the desert,” says Susan Smilek, lifestyle studio design director at Shaw Contract. “Inspired by canyon surfaces and undulating patterns in the sand, the collection features abstract designs and colorways, fluidity of pattern, and organic ambiguity, giving designers flexibility and suitability for a range of projects and settings.”

With twenty-one custom patterns of sculptured texture and high-definition that only Shaw Contract offers, Desert Lights presents a breathtaking view carved from nature. Shout into a canyon of color and it will echo back to you in muted gradations picked up in the reds, grays and earthy tones of its walls. Placed at the feet of people moving in spaces designed for restfulness, they too will hear the calm.

“This new collaboration is the result of a well-established relationship between our studio and Shaw Contract,” says Barry Richards, principal and studio leader of Rockwell Group. “It is always exciting to work with the Shaw Contract team because they share our vision and desire to push the boundaries of both innovation and design.”
