Brightview Senior Living, a leader in senior living that builds, owns and operates more than 40 communities along the east coast, announced a new partnership with FitWay Rubber Surfacing. FitWay pathways are a product of PlayCore, a company that develops leading research and has a complete portfolio of innovative products, programs, and services to build healthy communities through play and recreation.  In partnership with Brightview, PlayCore developed FitWay for outdoor healthcare spaces featuring an enhanced grip and attenuation that does not compromise gait and balance.

Brightview communities in Sayville, NY, Shelton, CT,  Lake Tappan, NY, and Paramus, NJ, now feature FitWay in outdoor areas, and going forward, it will be included in newly developed Brightview locations. In addition to outdoor pathways, apartments in the Wellspring Village, the innovative memory care units reserved for those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, will be equipped with a padded vinyl flooring for the same purpose.

“Every 11 seconds, an older adult in the United States is treated in the emergency room for a fall. With resident safety a top focus for Brightview, we are taking every precautionary measure to ensure that our residents feel secure and empowered in their daily activities,” said Patrick Doyle Ph.D., regional vice president of operations at Brightview Senior Living. “This is why we have collaborated with PlayCore to design FitWay—a proactive solution that is reducing our residents’ risk of injury if they fall outdoors.”

FitWay is a two-layer rubber ground covering that consists of a specialized, attenuating bottom layer and top wear course layer. Together, this creates an effective, long-lasting surface with superior grip and more give in case of impact compared to standard walking surfaces like concrete and natural earth. The material serves as a durable pathway for pedestrians to follow and is also an incentive for seniors to maintain healthy activity levels on a safer surface.
