Mafi is the first natural wood flooring manufacturer in the world to successfully complete the Living Product Challenge – one of the world's most rigorous certification programs. The Living Product Challenge is only awarded to completely sustainable products that contribute to an environmentally friendly and viable future.

The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) is a non-profit organization based in Seattle. With the goal of creating a sustainable future, the organization started the Living Product Challenge (LPC). Living Products are inspired by nature, save resources and are produced only with renewable energies. Their designs are both aesthetically refined and functional. These are products that give more than they take and therefore improve our quality of life. The high-quality natural wood floors from mafi meet all the requirements of a Living Product: mafi is the first flooring manufacturer in the world with floors that are certified for their sustainable, natural and health- promoting properties. The real wood floorboards are made exclusively from natural materials. Since the wood is carefully treated and left in an unaltered state, people can come into direct contact with it, contributing to their health and well-being. "The Living Product Challenge” says Carlo Battisti, president of Living Future Europe, “is a framework for manufacturers to create products that are healthy, inspirational and give back to the environment. Congratulations to mafi for paving the way, we are looking forward to other leading companies in Europe to follow this vision”.

The LPC label provides information about all product details. It states where the product originates, what resources are extracted in its manufacturing, the length of its lifespan and what materials can be salvaged at the end of its lifetime. The label also determines the water and energy consumption required for its production. In addition, the amount of CO2 and waste generated during the product’s manufacturing are also evaluated. Transparency and the fair treatment of all company employees – regardless of their origin, age, physical abilities or sexual orientation – also play important roles. Finally, all materials used in the product are listed on the certificate. The majority of mafi’s real wood floorboards now carry the well-deserved and authentic LPC certificate.

Living Products are needed to create Living Buildings: buildings that are made from completely natural raw materials and that produce more energy than they consume. To build as many Living Buildings as possible, ILFI collaborates and cooperates with developers, investors, architects and designers as well as manufacturers of building materials. Together, these fields can create Living Buildings and pave the way for a greener future.
