In an industry traditionally dependent on virgin plastics and PVC, Mohawk is charting a new course for sustainable flooring that doesn't compromise on performance or aesthetics.
"Mohawk's Resilient Revolution is more than a movement; it is a breakthrough," said Adam Ward, Mohawk's vice president of product management, resilient. "Our goal is to not only help protect homes but also the environment around us, raising the standard of what flooring can be."
At the forefront of this revolution is SolidTech R, a flooring solution that combines recycled water bottles with natural stone materials. "SolidTech R is made with natural stone along with the equivalent of 20 recycled water bottles in each square foot," Ward explained. This innovation builds on Mohawk's track record of recycling nearly 60 billion bottles over the past decade, with plans to prevent an additional six billion bottles annually from entering landfills and waterways.
The environmental benefits don't stop at recycled content. The company's PureTech line, which saw one of Mohawk's most successful product launches in 2023, offers a 100% PVC-free solution made from 70% recycled content and features an 80% renewable, organic core.
"PureTech's 2023 debut ranked among Mohawk's most successful launches due to the product's widespread adoption and high demand," said David Moore, Mohawk's vice president of product management.
This year, Mohawk is introducing a new tier to create more trade-up within the product line. Two collections of PureTech Premier with Signature Technology embody the allure of natural hardwood with artistic precision. Each plank is crafted with up to 75 layers of texture for multidimensional beauty."
Beyond environmental considerations, these new products boast impressive performance features. SolidTech R offers three times greater scratch resistance and impact resistance than traditional SPC flooring, while remaining acclimation-free – making it ideal for new construction and three-season homes. The product line comes with a Lifetime WetProtect Gold Floodproof Warranty, guaranteeing against water damage.
Moore emphasizes the products' practical benefits: "This enhanced protection covers all pets with no exclusions, safeguards against stains and also fortifies the surface from scratches with a lifetime warranty, providing a stronger defense against everyday wear and tear from pets."
To underscore its commitment to environmental protection, Mohawk has partnered with Plastic Bank, ensuring that every purchase of PureTech and SolidTech R contributes to preventing ocean plastic pollution.
As the company looks ahead to 2025, Ward remains optimistic about the industry's transformation: "We sparked a significant change in the industry when we kicked off the Resilient Revolution last year. We hope to keep delivering a new kind of love for innovation. Retailers that have not yet acted should seize the opportunity in 2025 to join the revolution."
In a market where consumers increasingly demand sustainable solutions but traditionally haven't been willing to pay premium prices for them, Mohawk's approach of combining environmental responsibility with superior performance and competitive pricing could prove to be a game-changing strategy for the flooring industry.
