RadiciGroup, the Italy-based worldwide producer of chemicals, plastics, fibers, and textiles, has introduced a new antimicrobial nylon carpet yarn, polyamide 6, containing Milliken & Co.'s AlphaSan antimicrobial agent.

"We observed an increase in demand for carpets and rugs in the Scandinavian countries and Northern Europe where patented antimicrobial fibers are now offered," said Federico Previtali, a sales director for Radici. "By offering this option to these markets, we can reach contractors in sectors such as hospitals, kindergartens and offices where the need for the product is the greatest."

RadiciGroup is among the first producers in the world to create an antimicrobial polyamide 6 where the agent is integrated during the production of the yarn itself and not during the finishing process. This approach means that the carpet maintains its antimicrobial properties for life, leaving the carpet fresh and protecting it from odors.

Radici noted several reasons for choosing AlphaSan as their antimicrobial of choice. "AlphaSan excelled beyond other antimicrobial offerings in efficiency, safety and quality," said Previtali. "We are even considering extending our antimicrobial carpeting products into the automotive market."

AlphaSan antimicrobial agent employs advanced silver-based technology to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mildew, mold, and other microorganisms that can cause odors, discoloration and deterioration of various consumer and commercial products. AlphaSan is used in a wide range of consumer goods, such as apparel and whirlpool tubs, as well as commercial applications, primarily food and beverage processing and commercial icemaking equipment.
