Jimmy Reed, recognized as the top installer of luxury glass mosaic tile in the United States, recently completed the custom design and installation of two overflow infinity vessels for a celebrity mansion in the “Oaks of Calabasas” in Los Angeles County.

This private mansion in “The Oaks” rests on a cliff’s edge high in the Santa Monica Mountains, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the iconic Malibu skyline just below. Jimmy Reed custom-built the overflow, infinity spa and rectangular basin that rise above the main 44’ x 22’ pool, and then perfectly surfaced both with a gorgeous selection of glasstile manufactured by Oceanside Glasstile in nearby Carlsbad, CA. Installed by Reed with the Tessera collection of 1” x 1” iridescent glasstile in the color Bronze, both water features sparkle and shimmer in the bright California sunshine by day, then fade to a warm, deep-orange ember as the sun falls behind Malibu each night.

“We just posted the beauty shot of the spa feature to our Facebook business page and to-date, it’s the most popular picture we’ve ever posted,” said Stephanie Duerden, marketing manager at Oceanside Glasstile. “It’s just a beautiful, eye-popping glass tile water feature in the perfect setting.”

The Tessera collection provides a rustic feel with its handmade edges, and was the ultimate selection for this spectacular project. The series continues to be one of Oceanside Glasstile’s top-selling lines, and the company remains the leading North American manufacturer of high-quality glass mosaic tile for architects, designers and tile contractors.

“Tessera is definitely one of our signature collections,” Duerden said. “The product has a real artistic quality with its rustic edges that speak to its handmade nature. The series has some really strong color options, and the Bronze used for this project is absolutely one of those. It just captures light so beautifully.”

The vanishing-edge vessels that Rock Solid Tile completed were essential design-elements for the project, namely the four-sided, therapeutic overflow spa that was custom-built for the homeowner. Rock Solid Tile received some input from the owner when building the four-sided, 8 ½” x 8 ½” square spa that offers panoramic, infinity-edge views. The client expressed concerns about the comfort of the family patriarch, given his tall, heavy-set build. With this input, Reed designed and then installed then created a custom, roomy interior. The resulting architectural spa more than met the client’s needs and was the key to providing a special touch of exclusive comfort. The rectangular basin sits directly adjacent to the therapy at the deep-end of the main pool.

“The therapeutic spa on one edge of pool’s deep end is pretty unique,” Reed said. “It’s four-sided, very angular and contemporary to look at. It has an unbelievable view with a vanishing-edge design looking over the edge of this cliff. After talking with the client we learned the husband was a big guy, so we custom-built the inside of the spa to include unusually large radius transitions that start right at the top with the head rest. The interior of the spa was meant to almost cradle the homeowner, providing super comfort with huge, soft radius transitions to accommodate the big fella’.”
