This increase is necessary to ensure the health of the carpet recycling industry in California, according to California Carpet Stewardship Program (CARE), which formally requested the increase on September 20, 2023.

Circular Polymers by Ascend, a recycler of post-consumer carpet, recently launched Cerene, a line of recycled polymers and materials made from the company’s proprietary carpet reclaiming technology. 

CARE announced winners of the Persons of the Year Awards for 2022 on April 26 in conjunction with the organization’s 21st Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. The 2022 Persons of the Year are Joe Yarbrough and Wyatt Rollins.

Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) is pleased to announce that the California Carpet Stewardship Program has achieved a carpet recycling rate of 33 percent for 2022. This far exceeds the 27 percent goal set in the Program’s Five-Year Plan, and the California carpet recycling rate has more than tripled since 2015.

This CalRecycle directive follows several months of requests by CARE for CalRecycle approval of an assessment increase to extend program solvency.

CARE Executive Director Bob Peoples said recent advances in plastic recycling technology promise a new world of uses for recycled carpet material.

There are currently 123 CARE public drop-off sites in all 58 California counties and the organization provides support for drop-off sites. 

As a result of CalRecycle's disapproval of Carpet America Recovery Effort's (CARE) five-year plan for 2023-2027, the differential assessment currently charged on carpet sold in California will not increase January 1, 2023, as previously announced. The current levels will remain in effect until further notice.

The funds support record carpet recycling rates. The increase is necessitated due to rising costs and declining sales, CARE said.
