Despite significant benefits, only 3% of people admitted that they never have their carpets cleaned by professionals, research shows. United Carpets & Beds conducted a survey asking the public how often they clean their carpets. The results highlighted that most households aren’t caring for their carpets in the proper way. Without this attention, not only can the carpets become permanently stained or crushed, they can harm people’s health.

“You should have professionals clean your carpet at least once every 12 to 18 months. This will make sure that it always looks good,” said Paul Pearce of the National Carpet Cleaners Association. “A carpet that’s professionally cleaned on a regular basis will last for many years—often beyond its suggested life.”

Having your carpet professionally cleaned every year can: prolong its life, help prevent or lessen the symptoms of asthma, increase a home’s value or make it more desirable to buyers, help control or prevent dust mite infestations, removes all stains (whereas DIY methods may actually leave further stains), eradicate stubborn stains, restore areas trampled by heavy footfall, and make sure dirt and bacteria are completely removed.

“Different carpets will respond to different cleaning applications," said Will Hickman, marketing manager at United Carpets & Beds. "Enlisting the help of a professional cleaning company that’s familiar with the fibers and make-up of each type of carpet is a great way to keep your carpet looking as good as new for many years.”
