Schlüter-Schiene Marks 50 Years of Tile Edge Innovation

By FLOOR Trends & Installation Editors
Schluter Schiene
January 26, 2025

A bathroom renovation challenge in 1975 sparked a revolution in the tile industry that continues to shape installation practices worldwide.

German tile setter Werner Schlüter, confronted with protecting exposed tile edges around five doorways, developed an ingenious solution in his workshop. Traditional methods like marble thresholds proved inadequate, leading him to create the Schiene – an L-shaped metal profile that would become the foundation of a global enterprise.

What began in the Schlüter family home quickly gained traction among fellow installers. By 1978, growing demand necessitated a dedicated production facility in Iserlohn, Germany. The company's expansion accelerated through the 1980s, establishing subsidiaries in Plattsburgh, USA, followed by operations in Canada, Turkey, and throughout Europe.

The Schiene profile underwent significant evolution over the decades. A crucial 1981 upgrade replaced rounded perforations with trapezoid-shaped ones, enhancing mortar bonding strength and durability. The company expanded the product line with various materials, sizes, and finishes to meet market demands. A 2001 breakthrough introduced a patented grout spacer, ensuring precise installation alignment.

This initial innovation catalyzed the development of other industry-standard products. The company's "By the installer, for the installer" philosophy led to groundbreaking solutions like the Ditra uncoupling membrane and Kerdi waterproofing membrane. These products addressed common installation challenges while maintaining quality and ease of use.

Today, marking its 50th anniversary, Schluter-Systems' portfolio extends beyond edge protection to include sophisticated solutions for modern construction needs. The company offers comprehensive systems for underfloor heating, lighting solutions, and customizable shower installations, maintaining its position as an industry leader in tile installation innovation.

Werner Schlüter's workshop solution to a common installation problem has evolved into a global standard for tile edge protection, demonstrating how practical innovation can transform an entire industry. As the company celebrates this milestone, it continues to advance the field with solutions that address the evolving needs of tile professionals worldwide.
