Spurred by “installation problems, liability concerns and marketplace confusion,” two tile groups are launching an initiative to certify porcelain tile. Called the Porcelain Tile Certification Agency, the organization is a partnership between the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association and the Tile Council of North America.

To apply, manufacturers can submit samples of tile series to be certified to the agency. Costs will include testing fees and “initial and annual” certification fees. Additionally, tiles will have to be resubmitted for certification every three years.

Certification will be managed by a six-member board of directors. Both the CTDA and TCNA will appoint one principal director, as well as first- and second-alternate directors. For more information, call (630) 942-6588.
