MAPEI has announced that it has received the Tile Council of North America’s Green Squared certification for its first tile and stone installation product – Ultralite Mortar. As a member of TCNA, MAPEI committed itself to this sustainability program from its inception.

“We are pleased to be the first installation products manufacturer to have a product certified under this rigorous standard,” said Dr. Neil McMurdie, Research & Development Director for MAPEI Americas.

MAPEI’s Ultralite Mortar is a premium-grade, lightweight, single-component, thin-set mortar for floors and walls that can also be used for medium-bed and non-sag applications. It is a polymer-modified mortar formulated with MAPEI’s Easy Glide Technology (for application) and with BioBlock (for mold and mildew resistance). Ultralite Mortar is produced at six locations in the United States and Canada: Brampton, Ontario; West Chicago, Illinois; Delta, British Columbia; Fredericksburg, Virginia; Laval, Quebec; and San Bernardino, California.

The Ultralite Mortar product met the standards for use of reclaimed manufacturing waste of recycled material, environmentally sustainable packaging, durability and performance integrity, indoor air quality for low-/non-emitting products and cleaning/environmental maintenance guidelines. Each of the six production facilities where MAPEI manufactures Ultralite Mortar also had to pass more than 35 exacting tests for sustainability before the certification was awarded by SCS (Scientific Certification Systems) Environmental Certification Services, one of TCNA’s approved third-party certifiers.

“We have for many years practiced sustainability on a global scale, and the standard practices and processes we have in place at all MAPEI facilities have helped us achieve the Green Squared certification,” McMurdie commented. “We strongly support TCNA’s efforts to demonstrate through the Green Squared program that tile and stone are a vital part of a sustainable built environment.”
