Celebrating Flooring Excellence: The 12th Annual Installation Awards

The flooring installation industry's most skilled craftsmen took center stage at this year's 12th Annual Installation Awards, showcasing projects that demonstrate both technical mastery and creative vision. From intricate tile work inspired by Portuguese streets to complex carpet installations that flow like ocean waves, this year's winners proved that exceptional flooring goes far beyond basic installation.
What strikes me most about these awards isn't just the technical skill on display but the courage required to put your work out there for scrutiny. Each entry represents countless hours of problem-solving, precision cutting, and meticulous attention to detail. These installers didn't just lay flooring; they created experiences.
Take Josh Vassallo's "Streets of Portugal" tile installation in Texas, where he hand-cut intricate porcelain details after completing extensive A.R.T. training. Or consider Charlie Rapplean's team tackling a custom Axminster carpet with no pattern repeat, a project so complex it required multiple meetings with the London manufacturer and essentially installing the carpet twice to ensure perfection.
The international flavor this year was particularly exciting. Hussain Razzaq brought a unique perspective from London, using drone and satellite imagery to determine optimal herringbone direction for maximum spatial impact in confined luxury apartments. His logistical challenges (navigating London traffic for two-hour commutes to a 12-mile job site) remind us that great installation often requires overcoming obstacles beyond the floor itself.
Innovation appeared in unexpected places. Edward Kinzer drew inspiration from UK LVP design groups to create a herringbone with pinstripe border that elevated the entire space. Jeremy Redig battled howling winds during a metallic epoxy installation, adapting his approach and working from inside the garage, then celebrated with a McLaren ride courtesy of his satisfied client.
Perhaps most impressive was the commercial work requiring coordination with active operations. Neal Bennett's team installed complex tile designs in an occupied collegiate athletic facility without disrupting daily activities, while Dwayne Pruitt's crew prepared for every possible scenario during overnight commercial installations, bringing backup tools and materials knowing stores would be closed at 2 a.m.
These awards celebrate more than pretty floors. They honor problem-solvers, artists, and professionals who transform spaces while navigating real-world challenges. Each winner exemplifies what happens when skill meets determination, proving that exceptional installation work truly is both craft and art.Looking for a reprint of this article?
