WASHINGTON -- New applications for job benefits rose by a seasonally adjusted 20,000 to 387,000 for the week ending July 27, pushing claims to their highest level since the beginning of July, the Labor Department reported today.
The increase comes after claims fell sharply in the prior two weeks, but difficulties in adjusting for seasonal factors can distort the numbers, the Labor Department said.
