Shaw Industries’ Tuftex Division won the 2014 Cool Planet award, which recognizes Southern California Edison (SCE) business customers for demonstrating exemplary leadership in energy and carbon management.
According to Shaw, the Cool Planet Award honors the company’s commitment to implementing energy-efficiency projects, participating in demand response programs, and establishing environmental and greenhouse gas emissions management systems.
“Tuftex is proud to accept the Cool Planet award in recognition of our sustainability leadership,” said Jim Cusick, director of manufacturing for Tuftex. “We look forward to furthering our commitment to efficiency and conservation.”
Cool Planet award nominees are evaluated using a point-based system focusing on participation in a variety of integrated demand side management strategies as well as carbon management strategies.
“Cool Planet award winners are taking meaningful action every day,” said David Rosenheim, executive director of The Climate Registry (TCR). “They strive to make their organizations more energy efficient, cost effective and competitive.” TCR is a nonprofit collaboration between North American states, provinces, territories and Native Sovereign Nations, and has teamed with SCE on the Cool Planet award program.
Cusick said Shaw is committed to reducing its energy intensity and carbon emissions by 40% by 2030, reducing total waste to landfills by 100%, and reducing water intensity by 50%. He noted Tuftex has achieved over 750,000 kWh of energy savings with SCE energy management programs such as Express Solutions and Continuous Energy Improvement Program.
