With an abundance of different caulks and sealants on the market, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed when choosing the right product for your next bathroom or kitchen project. A great place to begin is to understand what exactly separates caulks from sealants.
You’ve probably noticed the terms ‘caulk’ and ‘sealant’ are often used interchangeably. The two products serve a similar purpose, which is to act as sealing agents to fill gaps and cracks, as well as bonding agents between building materials, such as joining countertops to sink bases. They are both applied to surfaces to prevent leaks using a caulking gun, which likely explains why a sealant is technically categorized as a type of caulk.
What is the difference between caulk and sealant?
The key distinction between a caulk and sealant? Elasticity. Caulk is typically made from a mixture of latex and acrylic materials, which make it more rigid and prone to shrinking when cured. A sealant offers superior elasticity and water resistance because it primarily contains silicone. The silicone material allows a sealant to easily expand and contract during changing temperatures without losing its airtight/watertight seal. Therefore, sealants are a smart choice for areas that experience frequent weather fluctuation and high moisture levels, such as kitchens, bathrooms, as well as around doors and windows.

Unlike a silicone sealant, it is paintable once cured, produces less fumes and can be cleaned up with mild soap and water rather than a chemical solvent.
This type of caulk is also easier to apply, ideal for hard-to-reach and time-sensitive applications. However, it’s important to keep in mind that acrylic-latex caulks only provide a moderate level of water resistance, making them better suited for interior applications without repeated exposure to water. Acrylic-latex caulks can take up to 72 hours to reach full cure.

Steps to apply caulk
Whatever fixture you are working with, the project will entail the same steps for application:
Prep the area: Clean off any dirt or dust particles with water (Do not use soap). Using a utility knife, remove any remnants of old caulking or sealant. New caulk or sealant will not adhere well to previously cured caulk or sealant. Once all the residue is removed, wipe the surface down with a rag and a disinfecting spray. You’ll want to create a completely clean and dry surface. Use a concentrated mildew remover if the area shows signs of mildew.
- Mask the gap: If you’re not comfortable with free-handing the caulk line, apply blue painter’s tape on both sides of the area where you will be applying, leaving the gap you want.
- Cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle: You should cut the tip of the caulk/sealant tube ⅛-inch wider than the bead of the caulk you want.
Apply the caulk: If using a caulk gun, use both hands and put your dominant hand on the trigger, while the other hand holds the caulking gun in place. Hold the tube at a 45-degree angle and work from top to bottom. If you're using the tube by hand, hold it at the same angle and follow the steps. Choose whatever method you prefer to gain easier control. If the bead of the caulk is too narrow, recut the nozzle to provide a larger opening.
Smooth the bead of caulk: Use a smoothing tool or your finger to push the caulk into the gap and create a straight line all the way across. Caulk in and smooth small sections, one at a time, and be sure to wipe the smoothing tool off after a couple of uses.
- Wait until the caulk has cured: Typically most types of caulk need approximately 24 hours to cure completely or a minimum of eight hours before exposing it to water or moisture. Silicone sealant can be applied at temperatures between 0 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and can withstand operating temperatures of -70° F to 400° F.
