Stains on Mohawk SmartStrand carpet made by NAA convention attendees.

Hoping to win a free iPad, attendees at the recent National Apartment Association Convention in New Orleans tried to stain Mohawk SmartStrand carpet using mustard, ketchup, red wine, fruit punch, chocolate syrup, soy sauce, grape jelly and other foods.

The stains were allowed to set, and during the last day of the show, the carpet samples were professionally cleaned. If a stain didn’t come out, the person who made that stain would win the iPad. However, the carpet cleaned up easily, according to Mohawk.

The carpet is cleaned on the last day of the show.

Mohawk presented the SmartStrand Challenge at the NAA convention to demonstrate the permanent, built-in stain resistance of its SmartStrand carpet, made using triexta, the first new fiber subcategory granted by the Federal Trade Commission in more than 50 years.

“Because of its durability and stain resistance, it’s possible to extend the life of the carpet for additional rentals before replacement. That can have a major impact on ROI,” said Seth Arnold, Mohawk's marketing director.
