As 2013 kicks off, we find ourselves once again in the throes of reflection, reminiscence and, of course, resolution; resolving to start this or stop that (or at least dial it back a bit) in order to better ourselves and those around us.

Last month I shared research that showed those who are the most successful in leadership, relationships and marriage are those who are not afraid to step up, address and discuss sensitive issues with others. That defense mechanism causes us to use ineffective methods of communication. When we are loaded with adrenalin, our brains lack the necessary blood flow to remain calm and think clearly.

Ah, money. Nothing like a good old-fashioned discussion about a person’s salary to bring an otherwise delightful conversation to a screeching halt. No? Next time you’re out with a group of friends, acquaintances, whomever, try this: wait until there’s a break in the conversation, turn to the closest member of the group and, in your most pleasant voice and with a big smile on your face, ask, “So, how much money do you make?”
